Technology-enabled solution addresses supply chain issues

In this time of the COVID-19 pandemic where the mobility of goods and essential products has become a problem, businesses must resort to and utilize digital technology to transport goods efficiently.

Pierre Curay, president-elect of the Supply Chain Management Association of the Philippines (SCMAP), said supply chains across the globe have been disrupted by the curtailment in the movement of goods and people implemented across countries to mitigate the spread of COVID 19.

The Philippines he said, must accelerate digitalization to cope with the crisis.  Unlike other countries whose automated systems have made them less vulnerable to disruptions in the supply chain, the movement of goods and essential services in the country has been hampered and delayed by confusion on the interpretation and implementation of guidelines on the movement of cargo, Curay added.

Curay cited the agriculture sector where the issue of broken supply chain is most apparent - goods do not make it to the consumers in Manila from the farmlands in North and South Luzon resulting to produce wastage.

To help address the issue, Curay shared SCMAP’s technology-enabled solution that proved appropriate because of mobility issues during the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) in Luzon.  Called "Mayani", this farm app integrates the players in the end-to-end supply chain of the food industry.  The platform connects stakeholders such as the government, farmers, transporters, consumers, firms and NGOs that provide last-mile services such as the GrabFood, Angkas, and Lalamove. This project was piloted three weeks ago in partnership with the Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The platform now allows farmers to sell their produce directly to the market without having to worry on the market and transportation.  The system has also allowed SCMAP to gather data and analytics which they can then provide to stakeholders.
