Water is a natural resource that is indispensable for life and thus a responsible management of our water resource is an absolute necessity. This becomes more imperative given the present water situation that we have right now. Data shows that 70% of the earth is composed of water. From this percentage, only 2.5 % of it is fresh water, the rest is salt water. Three quarters of this freshwater is trapped in the form of ice and snow and only the remaining one-fourth is what industries, agriculture and households can use. In the Philippines, average annual water availability is 4,500 cu.m. per capita and an estimated 3,200 cu.m. in 2025. However, the increase in population, urbanization and industrialization continue to put pressures on available water supply. The increasing demand for potable water results in over-extraction and depletion of groundwater. Pollution and climate change also pose rising threats on our water resources.
