The Energy Division of PCCI formulates private sector positions on key issues like alternative sources of energy, amendments to the EPIRA, and other energy-related legislative bills.

As its current advocacy, the Division aims to develop a single private sector position on key energy issues and provide industries the opportunity to avail of the privileges of competition in bringing down the cost of electricity.

Bio-Coal as Alternative to Fossil Fuel
Continuing to help government develop alternative technology and fuel sources, Dr. Felix Velasquez presented the study of Dr. Dino Foronda of the Asia-Pacific Resource Recovery and Reuse Development Corp. (APRRRDC) on alternative energy and biocoal and biooil, which are biomass-derived fuels that can replace fossil coal in electric power generation.
Bamboo, Dr. Velasquez said, is the main source of biomass.  Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world and under Philippine condition, can grow at the rate 10-12 inches per day.  Bamboo can be harvested in 5 years and converted into biocoal or biooil.  1,300-2,000 hectares is needed to  produce 3-4Mw

Business groups call for quick solution to Palawan brownout problem; fear severe damage to tourism industry
22/02/10 - The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Palawan Chamber of Commerce call on all the parties involved to urgently resolve the dispute that is causing the power brownouts in the main island of Palawan, especially the City of Puerto Princesa.

The very popular tourist City of Puerto Princesa was unexpectedly thrown into darkness when power generator Delta P decided to shut down their 16mw plant last February 2 claiming that they have already delivered the 55 million kwh a year they have contracted and will lose money if they supply more power under the rate approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).
“We are facing the summer months when the influx of tourists reach its annual peak and when the vibrant local tourism industry depend on for a big portion of their annual revenues. We are supposed to have a very good year for tourism because the hot summer seems to be coming earlier. The lost revenues could run into a million pesos if local and foreign tourists are not assured of power and air-conditioning and they decide to go to alternative vacation destinations like Cebu, Bohol, Davao, and Baguio,” the Palawan Chamber said in a statement.
